Jungle Clear raises pH?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
spoke to jungle's customer support, they see no indications on their side either thru lab testing or customer call ins. they suggest maybe I added some buffer to cause the change - nope. so suggest checking my tap water, which I will shortly.

they did ask what I have been running (2 AC-110's sponge filter & airstone) & mentioned they had one customer complained incessantly that when they used one of jungle's air pumps it changed his pH & told them to have their lab test it out. Lo n behold the lab folks said air pumps do raise pH! they knew w/o having to test since they already tested b-4 selling the product!

also, CO2 will tend to raise pH - jungle tablets are CO2 based. but raise it so much?

I use an inexpensive aqua culture from walmart for a few months already & pH was always around 6.6.

told jungle coincidence I was treating with jungle clear that my pH changed (3 treatments last week b-4 I changed over to pure metro this weekend)

still same filtration/air pump usage, same foods, just using meds (prior to jungle uses prazipro & prior to that used melamix/pimamix). but filters should decrease pH as it ages b-4 cleaning but I had cleaned both (alternately) as well as the sponge filter but pH still on hi side.

I think maybe the jungle tablets reacted with something else? maybe the juices from frozen brine & bloodworms or kensfish HBH Natural Meat Flakes?

can't think of any buffers that could have been added to cause such a swing.

anyone have a clue at all?

but with daily 20% w/c & 50-75% w/c once a week those prior meds are all out by now.

last nite API Master Test results after w/c

pH 7.6 reg
pH 7.3 hi-pH test
AM=NI=NA= 0

also, another observation posted separately - lots of bubbling action on surface, looks like bubble nests! coincidence developed after using jungle clear but that was last week & still have bubble nests!

also noticed when I feed flakes it breaks up the surface bubbles till eaten or sinks, then bubbles come right back!

so I am guilty of presuming my tap is neutral pH! NOT! on reg pH test = 7.6 but on hi pH test = 8.8!!

so my water supply has added a lot of sodium hydroxide to raise the pH! so now, why had my tank readings read 6.6 for so long?

I guess factors of how often clean filters, w/c & whether local water co. changed buffer concentration. today they're closed but will call manana to see if they increased it at all.

thks for bearing with me on this as I try to uncover my reasons for change.
