I've acclimated mine to our hard water multiple times (7.8-8.0), and they never suffered from pH shock or other issues like most sensative softwater fish do (Apisto, Discus, Leaf fish)..

However, I never kept them for a long period of time, so over the longterm the lower pH would help. Good chance your pet store is telling you the hard water won't work because they took precaution to soften their water to cater to the Juruense's natural habitat.. However, most fish are incredibily adaptable to pH and you should concern yourself with Ammonia and Nitrite.. Ammonia is more toxic the higher the pH.

$70 is a bit high for that size.. $35 sounds more like it.. for an everyday price. I was selling 2-3"ers over MFK for $20.. Funny too, when I had em, no one wanted em..

I noticed none of the juvies had lower lyretails.. Wonder if they ate each other's all off thinking they are worms.. I've never imported one over 6" that didn't have both Lyretails tho, so it might be a juvie thing.

thanks miles did you drip aclimate them to your water? how hardy are they and whats there growth like? if the fish is still there next week i will get it but iam pretty sure it will sell:(

We used the 'squirt and dump' method by AmQuel do to the very long flight and ammonia levels coming from Peru.

I would reccomend drip acclimating if they are in Soft Water previously.. I have heard the best way to acclimate pH is set up a QT tank that has soft water and over a 3-4 week period, raise the pH and hardness through small partial water changes.

edit: ask your LFS if you can take home 2x 5g buckets of Water and then you could set up a bare-bottom QT tank, get it eating, and acclimate it over a longer period.

well i picked him up on thursday and hes more like 2" plus tail, he seems to be doing ok(but all he dos is swim up the side of the tank against the flow of the filter:screwy: )so far he eats blood worms ,krill, smelt ect but its hard to get him to eat it sence hes at the back of tank and most of it gos right by him when he gets comfy will look for food like a RTC would or will he only eat what floats by? would uping the temp to 84 and feeding him several times a day help his growth?and still woundering how fast that is?

thanks, i should be getting a cam soon so then i can post pics:D
