So I'm considering getting one of these loely catfish, and doing research on the net is making my head hurt :irked:

So much conflicting data, "most" places seem to agree a 180 is a decent home for life, but some dont, most agree 20" is average size for one, others I have read have said 4 feet :WHOA:

Assuming the majority are right and a 180 is a OK size, what can be kept with them?

My tank currently has 3 good sized tinfoils, 2 Oscars, a large pleco and a lima.

Could it live happily with these fish?

Also have a fire eel thats growing on in a smaller tank that I was looking to add.

Basicaly I guess what I am saying is, this is my tank...

Can I add a Juruense and a fire eel to it? (the two parrots will be moved on, Im only holding them for a friend for awhile) the decor will be changed alot to make the eel happy (Gravel coated PVC tubing etc) and I will make some caves, flower pots etc for them as well.

Thoughts?

Also any general guidelines, advice, anything to do with Juruense very much appreciated.

nice setup man!!! i would like to know as well.... BUMP

hopefully this helps. http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=566. they like a strong current in the tank. you can put in pretty much anything that it can't swallow

Yeah I have read that, was just after opinions off fish keepers here on MFK, I trust the information given on here more than pretty much anywhere else I have looked, here seems to be no nonesense honest advice, not just some muppet who never kept a fish over an inch saying you cant keap a RTC no matter what size it is in a 6 foot tank (for example) not even to grow it on etc.

Here you get answers like "it should be ok for a couple of years" propor advice :)

Thanks for the nice words, grown all the fish on from like 1" to what they are now, had them all about 7 years I guess, I lost one tinfoil when we had a PH crash (the only one we have ever had) when we were away for a weekend.

So you guys think the tank would be OK to add a fire eel (well thats going in anway as I already have it) and a Juruense? this would be for life, I dont have the room to upgrade and/or buy a bigger tank unfortunately.

Wont be overcrowded at all?

your 180 should be fine. all the tankmates you listed should be fine. i have had a few B. juruense over the years. they like strong current, frequent water changes. water temps between 78 and 80 degrees farenheit seemed to be the best temp. good luck with your purchase.

Thanks for the advice.

How big would one have to be not to be seen as Oscar food? how broad are they when small, I know my Lima I grew on ended up having to be about 6" before I fealt comfotable putting him in with the Oscars mainly due to him being really quite thin, same with my fire eel, its currently about 9-10" but really thin.

Are these also very thin when young?

Oh also dont have much current in the tank presently, just one powerhead mainly for airation, what do you use to create a nice current for them? just a powerhead under the water or?

they are a bit broader then the lima at the same length. bigger powerhead for more current. maybe add a power head towards the bottom of tank. as for the size. if you want to be safe, around or close to the size of your oscars depending on how aggresive they are towards tankmates.

My Oscars are pansys tbh, the one will follow anything new around for a few hours to see if he thinks he can eat it, never has though, after that he seems to decide OK thats not food and never bother them again.

Never any aggression from either of them, extremely peacefull fish.

Your a lucky man. Jus recently my lovely 8-9'' lima got eaten by my 10-11'' oscar had them together since I got the lima in oct '08 it hurts oscar hadn't really bothered him that much. but poor lima is gone now. Also have a about 4'' jurenese in a grow out tank picky eater have had for about a month only wants to eat roseys/guppies. has grown but mostly in length. I would only put something same length as oscar or more.
