I have mine in growout/qt with a pair of temensis peacock bass.

The pbass dont seem to be bothering him.

I have a Brycon dentex in a different growout - and Im looking at ordering an Indo tarpon or Armatus.

Also have a GT that might go in this tank and or a couple oscars.

What does everyone think?

Any issues with these fish? I feel like most of them keep to themselves, although knowing the GT he is kinda a jerk.

This Juruense is beautiful. His streamer is longer than he is at 3" or so...pretty crazy.

The streamers break off periodically. I have a slobering cat that hes will get nearly a foot long sometimes, and he is only 5". The one on my 6" Tig does the same thing.

I was just impressed with how long it was, based on the fishes small size.

Ive never seen one this big, it took up half of the tank he was in at the store.

Hes incredibly active. Resting now but was swimming into the current for a good 20 minutes I would say.

Cool fish.

Back on topic - do any of the above tankmates sound good?

Or do I need a separate tank for this guy?

Thanks

Not sure if he ate the massivevore I crumbled up and dropped in the tank after lights out - but he did take bloodworms that I dropped in this morning.

Like people said - not a very active feeder, but when he snaps at stuff it is pretty awesome!

Ive decided against the armatus -

Any comments on those other tankmates? I really want to see what other people have to say. Everything online seems to suggest that this catfish is very docile, and he is too cool to lose him in a tank of bullies.

At that size I would keep him separate.. I found with all my cats when little they are delicate. even my hybrid was pretty dainty up until he hit about 10" now hes like a brick... but when young imho most cats are best left with docile tank-mates. not to mention issues w/ food competition/bullying ect... not worth it imho.

He is doing well, but I am on the same page with you.

The bass are taking pellets well and are moving on up to a larger tank soon.

As far as long term however, what do you think of these selections?

non-territorial larger fish. gar, rays, bichir, knives ( might be chancy but likelihood of fatality before you can separate would be minimal imo), spiney eels. Other cats of similar size. long term imo the pbass might work if they ignore him and aren't trying to actively breed. anything that's more defensive then offensive.. as the cats going to try it once then leave them alone. I get leary when fish fight back... because ime my cats end up w/ the worse part of the deal. My hybrid went after my smaller trop... and the trop turned around and shredded his right pectoral fin like nothing.... hybrid took off across the other side of the pool w/ that "Holy crap!" look and has respected all the gar more since. my TSN is even more docile and just moves out of the way of the gar, but they don't actively hunt him either. so imo that's the type of dynamic everyone will thrive in particularly when your dealing w/ a "predatory community".

Everyone has their place... and no one feels threatened either physically or territorialy... and unless you've got a massive pond set-up for the jur and tank-mates territory is always going to be an issue with some fish, and imo best to avoid those fish that are going to be excessively territorial or are notoriouse for being territorial about the same level/areas your jur will want.

Oh an arrowana might be a good tank-mate...hrrm... a black arrow, jur, and a school of SD's or something would look killer.

agree with amy on this the get will be the only problem I see and i'd suggest the tarpon over the armatus it would fit in much better with the bass and as far as other cats go i'd say a tig complement the juru the best

I have my juruense with a GATF, a black arowana, two imperial loaches and a dwarf goonch. She doesn't bother anything that's too big to eat.
