I recently purchased a 30 gallon aquarium and I really want to take very good care of my future fish. However, I also want a monster. This makes me wonder what types of monsters are out there that either stay small enough for a 30 gallon or grow slow enough that only after 10 or so months they will need a larger tank (and my wallet will be large enough to supply them with that tank). I was kind of leaning towards a datnoid, but am very open to other suggestions. Any advice you could give would be great. In addition, is there a possibility of tank mates?

Also, what are the benefits of having sand vs. gravel at the bottom of your tank? I'm leaning towards sand, but will be happy with gravel if you need to spend too much extra time upkeeping a sand tank.

Thanks in advance.

I think a 30 gallon would be fine for a growout for some dats if you start em at around 1-2". Leaf fish maybe? Idk, it's all up to your preference. Just be ready to do 2 50% water changes a week. ;)

i say get a arapaima.....JK! Get a baby rhom! :D

Really? Well that won't work. Unless I buy another water distiller. OR unless there's a way to get water fit for an aquarium in a city (cheaply).

Thanks for the responses so far, everyone.

What about a Senegalus, Black Knife Fish tank? Or a Senegalus, Shovelnose Catfish tank? Or maybe even all three? Obviously all would be purchased young. When they get big I have access to two 55 gallon tanks.

Sorry for being so inquisitive, but this forum is such a great resource.

No, it's fine. And yes, weekly water changes are recommended, lol, I usually do daily 50% water changes if I want a fish to grow really fast. What kind of shovelnose cat? You do realize catfish are among the fastest growers in the fish world? Black ghost knife might be fine in a 55, as they stay smaller than other knives. That might be your best bet if you want a knife fish. How is your tap water over there in Ohio? Mine is pretty clean in California and have had no problem just adding it directly from the tap to my tanks in 50% water changes, even in grow out tanks with just one fish. But then again, I recommended the 2 water changes a week as a way to really increase growth, lol. I guess you wouldn't really want that. So 1 50% water change a week or even every 2 weeks should be fine for you, depending on how many fish you are planning to keep in that grow out tank.

Best water conditioner on the market.

What exactly is wrong with your tap water? Honestly, I would not use distilled water for my fish, it has no minerals in it.

The tap water in Columbus, OH is pretty awful for fish, at least the part I'm in. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but the ph and ammonia are really high. But if you think that Prime will prepare it then I guess its worth a shot.

There's pretty much no point in doing WC if your tap water is high in ammonia. First ned to neutralize/detox tap water by putting it into a garbage can or bin, then add prime to detox your water and leave for a day or two, and pump it into your tank after WC.

I got a senegalus in my 30; pretty fat and happy right now and he's about 5.5in. Seem to have slowed down in his growth for now.
