Just a Fish
He was the Starry Night that lit up my life.....
It was love at first sight when he caught my eye through the murky glass in his little refuge. Tucked in under a tank full of Silver Arrow's and Clown knife , staring at the kneecaps of children running by as they made a bee-line, arms and index fingers outstretched as E.T. did toward Elliot when communicating his heartfelt plea for a phone call home. HOME .... home is where the heart is they say and right now my heart was nestled in amongst his Madagascar brethren one of many who's endangered genetics made the 15,000 km journey to this little glass display.
In amongst the rest, he was brighter than all the rest and if it's possible for a fish to exude confidence and charisma, this fish radiated both with an aura that made all the others seem like shadows. I wanted him , I needed him.... and clearly he needed me. Who knows how long he'd treaded the waters of this aquatic purgatory watching children run and point at goldfish that would be sentence to death in a fishbowl and flushed like a spent meal.
Oscars that left the size of his gill plate and returned a few months later when they grew too large and started cannibalizing their molly and tetra step - brothers and sisters in their 30 gallon foster homes. Despite my previous declarations to myself only minutes before that I would not take anymore fish home and that I didn't want anymore , minutes after that I was walking out to my car with a bag of Timothy hay in one hand and my new love in the other ..... The dance had begun
