i would read up a bit further into gator gars and gars in general...you claim to be very experienced and ready for "expert fishes" but you ask a lot of newb questions (even if you claim that you know the answers). do a search and you'll find the answers to your questions along with more information--

just to see what you know... tell us everything you know about gars.
im not flaming you. you just seem like your saying you are experienced yet your not. i myself have alot to learn.
did you happened to know that they dont grow that big in captivity. i feed mine variety of food, 4 kinds to be exact squid, tilapia, prawn, gold fish about 2-3"
if you plan to get one i suggest not cause its not only expertise(like you call your self) that matters when keeping one. you also need to have the means and money.
same thing runs through my mind, why call your self expert and ask such question about gars.
My situation is different to most, I live in the uk and im completely nutts about prehistoric fish... im fascinated to learn and study/observe as much as i can whilst gaining all the info i can along the way.
Here in the uk no one really is set up to handle gator's i will be in another two months but mine is only a baby @ 17"....
Its common place here it seems for gators to be grown to under 3' then whacked on the head.... well im sure i can do something about that situation even if only for a coupled of specimens....
Why don't you guys give him/her a break-Look I consider myself pretty knowledgable when it comes to large Cichlids-but I always want another opinion-it doesn't mean I doubt myself it just means that no matter how much exp. I may have I like to hear the opinions of others and learn new things. This is a large site when I first joined it was overwhelming and I finally got the hang of things-just cause someone asks a question that may be silly to you does not mean you have to flame on that person.
