I am wanting to build my first 200 gal. plywood tank and was just wondering if anyone has built one before and how long these tanks usually last, or will these tanks start to leak quickly or do they last awhile?

I have a couple of questions about your project...
Why only 200 gallons?
Why not go with a more cost effective alternitive like a pallette tank?

How long can a well built plywood tank last? 10 years or more if you build it right and seal the wood correctly.

sorry bud, but the only reason ppl build plywood tanks is because tanks dont come in 500+gallons... not really because they are cheap... on average they cost between $2-$10 per gallon to build... and im not pulling this our of my butt... there is a thread on here for the 700 gallon tank useing abs sheet that has cost arl over 2g's... and a few others and none have cost less then $500... inless you somehow work at a glassshop a lumber store and a boat supply shop so you can get everything for free...

sorry dude, not to sound harsh but a 200g isnt worth it, unless you need it in a weird shape or place where a glass/acrylic tank isnt sutable... check out criegslish... there are free or cheap tanks on there all the time.

thanks everybody I'll go and check out other places including craigslist, was just wondering about them i see allot of people on here talking about them thats the reason i was asking about them, but thanks for the info.

yes a small tank is not cost effective, however where i am a 150 store bought on sale 1500.00 so a plywood 250 0r 350 is the only way to go which is what i am going to do this spring.

I have a 300 gallon rubbermaid stock tank buried on the ground outside... it cost $219 at the feedstore + tax. I thought this was expensive so I started looking at building my own... went to the hardware store, started pricing things... drove over to the feedstore and bought the tub. :)

I don't know, depends how you construct it and what you use...I'm doing a variation of a Plywood tank, 65 gallons, and I should be breaking about even on it...

Personally I'd say around 120 gallons is where it starts to become cheaper building your own...this is the largest you can make with a single sheet of plywood. (4x2x2).

yea I found plans on here for a 140 gallon plywood tank, the plans and material list was calculated for the construction of two 140 gallon tanks. But you can cut the material list in half to only build one 140 gallon tank but some materials are cheaper if you buy in bulk. But for what I am wanting I am going to build just one 140 gallon tank later this year or earlier next year.

i will be building a 300-400gallon "plywood" only with sheetrock on concreet sealed. the rason that its not a regular tank is because i will be taking the panals off of my 120 and useing them as the face. it will be about 12'long and 24" tall, and about 24"-30"deep its going to be a L tank in the corner of my basement.

i expect the final to cost me a grand. but thats a questamation.

sounds like its going to look great after its finished, but with these plywood tanks do you have to use a sump pump or can you use a couple of HOB filters or a large Canister filter like the Cascade 1500? And where would you get the glass for the front?
