so how much room does a discus need? 55g per fish, or less. how fast is their growth rate? i am thinking about getting a couple cheap babys.

A 55 gallon would be fine for 5-7 adults, or a dozen or so juvis to grow out (Then keep the ones you want, sell the rest)....The growth rate will basically depend on the amount of water changes you do. If you hit them with heavy/frequent water changes, you will see an inch per month growth for the first few months...Basically, after one year, it is common to have 6 inch discus if your food and water changes are in order....I've got some quater sized snakeskins.....Home bred:

I think most people stock at one adult fish per 10 gals. of water. A breeding pair could be kept in a 37. Not really enough space or water volume to keep a normal group happy. I think you could keep 6 in a 55 provided you stay on top of water changes. I'm keeping 13 in a 125 gal. with drip, and it's not a problem. However, I plan to take 4 of them out in about a month just to cut down on the load, and to help stock another tank.
