I was just wondering, as my fish grow i need to change water more and what not, so i was wondering, i have an extra empty 20 gallon, can i put it under the other tanks stand. and have it with water to age, as i take the water out of it to put in other tanks for water changes. can i refill it and age water this way? and also.. would having lets say.. a Beta and a few live plants in that 20 gal help the "aging" process speed up a bit?
anyone else do this? or have any thoughts?

No betta. Not sure about the plants. The 20g is a great idea for aging water. All the beta would do is add nirtrates to it, and we do waer changes to take way nitrates. So no betta, questionable for plants.

i want to avoid using chemicals.

i figured

Beta=Nitrates..
Plant=Use Nitrates
= good fresh water,

am i wrong?

not in the quantities that we're talkin about.
otherwise you'd be able to keep a betta in a planted 20 and never have to chage water or need a filter. and that's just not true.

well, it can be true.
one teacher at school has a beta in a 15 gal with floating duckweed and amazon swords and hasnt changed the water since ive been going to that school 3 years ago... the only thing that has changed is the fish.. one beta dies.. another one goes in,

tho thats not how it should be done.. it can be :P

hmmm.......
one betta died another goes in.........
INGENIOUS!

i think it was from old age (beta was 3?) but probaly not..
the other one is still alive,,
must be one of those "odd time out" kinda things,

Doing it that way would allow you to de-chlorinate in advance and if you add a cheap heater, have a consistent temperature for larger water changes with less shock.
