g'day,
i have just bought 10 monoculus.all are about 3 inches and feeding well.
they are in a 3x2x2 at the moment, with some large "black widow" tetras as dithers. i have an 8x2x2 to put them in later. my question is, will i have a problem with so many in the future? or are they right to keep in a school of this number? i'm hoping they dont sort each other out to point were there are only 1 or 2 left as adults....do they fight to the death over territory or do they school up?

any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated
thanks in advance

They establish hierarchy ;) And which sometimes ends in death of the weakest links... That is a nice school.. Though it will likely cause some problem in the future for an 8x2x2. Though you likely have at least 2 years before you have any real issues. As long as your care is excellent.

I never call food.. Dithers :D

When a pair forms you could have a tank wiht two fish on one side and 8 on the other :D

I was wanting a qty of the size you have :D It should be an awesome sight when they approach 12 and beyond inches :D Keep us updated.

Dieselmack has some excellent videos with schools that large ;) on Youtube. And The Trust has a couple vids with schools that large in a smaller tank the Diesel did.. Check them out on Youtube ;)

yeah, thanks mate,

i will have a look at the Youtube vids...
i've always liked them, but for a long time, you could'nt get them in australia.
recently, some body has cracked the breeding process and raised them to the size that i bought them (about 2inches). ive only had them for 1 month, but i reckon they've grown at least an inch in that time. ive been giving them gambusia(a native guppy) that i catch from a pond nearby, and one in particular, will eat 3 at a time!!! even at this size, they are varacious eaters....its easy to see why they are at the top of the food chain in the amazon.....just one more question, ive heard that i should'nt feed them fish from the sea...is this correct? i only live 300yards from the ocean and can always get fresh mullet for them when they are bigger....why wouldn't they benefit from this? is the salt a problem?

you weren't wrong about the dithers being food, although i have never seen them, the black widow tetras are thining out in( 6 are now 1) with very shredded finage and they just seem to pass away as if they are exhausted. but like i say, ive never seen the bass even chase them....maybe they just never leave the glass while im looking at them...but when im gone... they may be harassing the s**t out of them....i mean it!

:D They are fun... If you want to see them chase the food :D Wait a day after the last food is gone then feed again :D
