I have a 55 gallon tank and I either want a Male GT or a male JD (or could a pair of JD work?). and was wondering if I had 1 male gt, could I put any kind of tankmate in there with him? And if I had a male JD (assuming I can't have a pair in a 55) could any kind of tankmate go with him? if so what kinds? I really like both fish and I know I can't have both in a 55 so this will help me decide. Thanks in advance.

The GT will need at least a 75 when grown. You can probably get by with the Jd pair with good filteration & water changes

My male and female GT's are in seperate tanks but both are just fine with non-chichlid tankmates. I've got little Queen Loaches in with the female and the male's been in with little Tetras, Gourami, Cory Cats & a Raphael cat just to name a few, and he was great with them all.
I do have my 4" Blue Dempsey pair in a 55 gal with Cory Cats and a small Raphael and they're fine. The Blue Dempsey's aren't 'supposed to' get as big as regular Dempseys but there's a posssibility they'll need a bigger tank. So I wouldn't go with 2 regular JD's in a 55. People always say Oscars can stay in a 55 g for life yet they claim GT's need a 75 g for life and Oscars get bigger. I don't feel a 55 g is big enough for either but if I were to put one or the other in a 55 g it would be the GT before the Oscar. (Did that even make sense?)

Oh I was told a gt could go in a 55g for life. Hmm, maybe I can do pair jd's then. I have eheim pro 2 canister, filters up to 90 gallons. And a power filter for 60 gallons. If I do a pair of jd's, can anything go in there with them?

I think you could keep a smaller catfish and or a pleco in there with a GT. If you go with a catfish, make sure and provide a hiding place.
