Hi guys just wondering if the foam filtering pads are needed in my sump as the bio cubes are suspended 1 inch above the bottom of the sump.
I set up the tank just the other day to test out the diy overflow that i built (it worked well) and there were a few dead bugs and dust in the bottom and it made its way into the sump and sat on the bottom after passing through the bio cubes.
do i need the foam

Which foam filtering pads? Do you have a pic or a link?

Yes, the filter pads should go about your biological media to keep the bacteria from getting suffocated in waste. This can also be bad for your return pump if any large particles get into it, building up over time and braking it.

thank you I<3fish this is by far the best answer

Yes, you need mechanical media of some kind before the bio. Some people like it after the bio, too.
Yep, but it's mostly just a porous sponge separating the bio from the pump to keep the mulm (basically impossible for it to not form under your bio section) out of the pump.
