As some of you know from my thread, I am using fish in conjunction with Nutrafin Cycle Bacteria to cycle my tank. Its going very well, too. I know that some of you use ammonia drops to cycle your tanks without fish. What I was wondering is whynot use something like Nutrafin Cycle Bacteria along with the ammonia drops to cycle your tanks? Wouldn't it make the fishless cycle go much faster?
Thats simple. many of us don't like cycle-in-bottle products because buying them is like playing roulette. You are either lucky that the bottle arrived at the LFS on the day of purchase and the bacteria in the bottle are still alive. Or the bottle has been in the store for a time long enough for the ammonia in the bottle to be used up and all the bacteria perish, which means you are essentially forking out $ to buy a bottle of dead bacteria.
And I believe most of us here who uses cycle-in-bottle got the latter. So I say screw the cycle-in-bottle and just stick to traditional fishless cycling with ammonia and nothing else and just wait it out.
I tried this before. I was setting up two tanks. One I did with just ammonia and the other with ammonia and cycle.
There was no difference, so I saved the money and did not buy anymore cycle since I think its BS.

Yup, like so many people keep saying "The Nutrafin Cycle or Aqua Cycle stuff is useless", but also, like many many people keep saying (and prooving) Seachem Stability works (as long as you follow the instructions).
It's NOT active bacteria in a bottle with a store of ammonia to keep it going............that is just not possible for any of these products. Seachem Stability is 'Dormant' bacteria, when you add it to the tank it 'awakes' (for want of a better description) and begins the process of seeding the tank.
Just do a seartch on this forum (or any other FW forum) for 'Stability' and then count how many people have confirmed it works.
Once again, just so there is no confusion, Nutrafin Aqua Cycle is NOT the same as Seachem Stability.
I wouldn't recommend borrowing anything from the LFS... you don't know what kind of diseases or parasites could come along for the ride.
If you could find a "BB in a bottle" product that actually worked, (and I've heard amazing things about Seachem Stability), then yes, using ammonia drops and said product would considerably speed up the cycle. The reason people don't do this is that they're distrustful of such products, when others have failed so spectacularly.
