This is just a thought I was having but I was wondering what you guy thought about this. I live near the passaic river and I thought about recreating the enviorment in there in a 55 gallon including:
-Dwarf Grass Pikes
-Small Catfish
-Aquatic Frogs
-Crayfish
-Driftwood
-Snails
-Live Plants
-Rocks
Now again as I said this was just a thought and I am sure there would be a few problems mainly relating to the "small catfish" but I thought it could be a cool project. Tell me what you guys think. Thanks

okay other than that what do you think? Its just a basic outline for an Idea.

looks good, probably need something bigger than a 55, though. for your "small catfish", definately go with a Bullhead. they average around a foot, and the world record for a brown bullhead is 6 lbs. they are a native species that stay small enough to be managable in a smaller aquarium, and are widely distributed. I'm sure they are native to your local river. if not, some species of bullhead is.
don't know anything about the dwarf pike. the bullhead will definately eat the frogs, crayfish and snails, though. If I was gonna try to do a smaller natives tank, I'd go with sun perch, bluegill and bullhead. Bass and gar would be awesome, but too big for what you're talking about.

There is a coldwater and natives section of this site. you'd get better info there.

I know about the bullheads, though. that's all I catch when I go out fishin' for catfish. just throw a line out with some kind of meat on the hook after dark hoping to catch a decent sized catfish. you're guaranteed to catch a small bullhead or tiny gar. at least here in florida.

Another issue would be that frogs would require some form of significant land area as well.

ok yea there are a few things i gotta work out and think about but I think it could be a good idea some time. Ill keep you guys posted. Thanks.

Dwarf pike only get to 2" at maturity.

Feed the cat well and create alot of hiding places for small critters, snails are prolific, lower the water level enough to add 2 top trays (one on each end) for the frogs to hang out on.

Place the filters inlet and return on opposite ends to induce a current.

Use river water to start it with too.

Remember this whole thing is going to be considered a quarantine tank for at least 3 months :D.

Alright now, too much talk, get it started and tweek as you go ;).
