Hey guys,
I've always been a fanatic about aro's and have owned quite a few. My last one was back in 2011, bought him around 3'' for $17. Sold him a couple months later as I was moving the tank and he was very skittish. He was about a foot long when I sold him with very nice coloring. I do not have any pictures of him as I didn't snap many of him.
Last Monday I decided to order another silver arowana from my local Uncle Bills Petstore. He arrived Wednesday and I picked him up around noonish. I arrived and saw him still in the bag as they just dropped him off. Told the clerk I wanted to take him home right away. He was about 7'' and I paid $52 for him. Brought him home and he put the bag in the tank to let the temps match each other. While he was in the bag he kept looking around and trying to get out of the bag. I let it sit for about 15 minutes as I divided my tank so he would have his own side since he would be new to the tank and I didn't want any other fish bothering him. After about 15 minutes I let him out of the bag. He explored his side of the tank like crazy but was a but skittish whenever I came up to watch him. I dropped pellets in and he took them immediately but spit them out. I didn't mind it as it was his first day. Second day I dropped some more pellets in again and same exact outcome. I knew he was hungry but it just wasn't the right type of food. Third day I went back out to Bills and bought frozen dried krill. I dropped them in and he instantly ate them.
I feed him piece by piece trying not to let any pieces sink to the bottom making sure he gets every single piece. Yesterday I decided to drop a couple pellets in and he takes them finally. So now I feed him about 3-4 pieces of krill, then another couple of pellets. I think that sounds like a pretty good diet for him. Today I held a piece of krill in my hand to see if he would eat from my hand, and to my surprise, it was a success! He took it straight from my hand. So I'm going to start hand feeding him and eventually train him to let me pet him. I feed him in the corner of my tank and he knows that now, so whenever I come down and turn on the lights, he waits there for me to drop food in. He's very calm now and is very comfortable in his tank. He doesn't jump or gets skittish when I walk up anymore. One of the best ones I've had so far. If I turn on the lights and just stand there, he swims against the glass trying to get to me. After feeding time, I usually sit and watch him. He likes to stay in the corner I feed him in and just watch and stare at me. I can see his eyes looking at me so I just chill there relaxing.
His name is Sake (Sah-kee) like the Japanese liquor haha. On a side note, I don't know if its too early to tell but it seems like he has slight DE already when I look closely. I'm sure he will have DE later on but I just hope it isn't serious although chances are high it will happen.
First pic is on day one. First pic is from yesterday and second pic is from day one. I swear he looks bigger than day one already. Seems like he's gonna grow quick. Eats like a pig and is very active so I wouldn't doubt it. The first photo does have effects since I posted in Instagram. Second pic does not have effects. In person, he does have some red orange around his fins which look really nice and I'm hoping the krill enhances the color.
