one of my friends is getting medically retired from my beloved Marine Corps :grinyes:....well anyways he just gave me a tiger sal and fire belly newt.

ive always had one FB that ive had for years in a 10 gal with gravel, some hiding places and the front half of the tank has about 2-3 inches of water.AWW HELL I WILL JUST TAKE A PICTURE im too lazy to explain everything(ill post em up in a minute)

anyways i have been looking around and i see that some people use soil with a small dish and some people use gravel....would this be fine or am i causing problems for it?

Cool tiger!!!! I'd try using peate moss for the substrate though.

im sorry to sound like a complete noob but the whole tank in moss(including under water? or just some spots???

Fburg huh? lived all over Va. sine 89

Yeah, they live in woodlands environments, so the peat moss is more natural to them, plus they like to burrow. Keep a shallow dish of water for them to soak in too. Here's a good site;

Where are you now?

peat moss or sphagnum moss will do. keep it moist and provide a large water dish for soaking.

how would the newts handle this new substrate too??? i was thinking of maybe putting a small divider and doing half gravel half mossy stuff so the newts would still have what they should but then the gravel side could be the Sals "water dish"

i agree, give the tiger an almost all land habitat with a large shallow water dish
for the firebellies that habitat is fine, just deepen the water a little bit
also that tiger is still young and if you dont seperate them he will eat the firebellies

I agree with ceeej31. When the tiger gets larger it will eat anything that moves and fits in its mouth. Movement is how they hunt.

Anyone know where I can get a few Oregon or California Newts in MA?
