I've never seen the inside, is it pretty straightforward to put my own filter media in it? Or should I order the official stuff? All I have bought so far is the filter itself.

I would buy Fluval BioMax. Its really good bio media. You can add it to all three baskets. I don't exactly know how much will fill all the baskets though.

i buy all fluval stuff for my fx5. But pretty much anything that holds bio ie, bio balls, scrubbies, biomax, etc would work.

use zeolite/carbon combo on the top tray and itll help keep your water clear.. my friend uses that combo and ima try it when i get the money.

and for the person that uses pot scrubbies... what do they do? are they same as ceramic rings or eheim sub pro? are they effective? and were do you get em? lol i need the info..

I just bought one as well. Seems like the best deal for the money, even if it wont fit under my stand. I'm probably going to fill mine with a combo of biomax and pot scrubbies. I've heard there is someone on the forum that sells 10 pot scrubbies for $2. The sponges that come with it plus any sort of bio media should do.

use zeolite/carbon combo

Zeolite should only be used if your concerned about high ammonia. Zeolite is not needed during the cycle process as long as you do water changes, usually. Zeolite should never be used after the filter has cycled.

I wouldn't bother with scrubbies in a Fx5, Ceramic media I personally think is better in canisters.
