This is the 2nd one I bought locally that has HITH. Now this fish will stay in quarentine and I have meds to treat. HITH is very hard to beat in sals, and more so then say oscars.
Should I take the fish back or just treat? Has anyone had success in treating sals for HITH?

How bad is the HITH?

I have never treated it personally, but if it looks manageable then I'd say keep - Sals being a pretty fish and all that.

It looks like it has just started around the eyes. He has a lot of color for only being 3''.

I wouldn't keep a newly purchased fish if it has HITH. Get your money back and buy from a more reliable source. It can be a challenge raising cichlids, starting with a healthy specimen is always best in my opinion. I might make an exception for a hard to find fish if the HITH isn't too advanced and if the price reflects the fact that the fish has HITH.

It looks like I'm stuck w/ the sal now. I called the LFS about the HITH and returning the fish, and they won't take him back. They have a 5 day policy where you can't return after you have had the fish for 5 days. This means they will not exchange or give your money back. I will be more careful about buying fish from this LFS in the future, and this really sucks.
I guess it is good I caught this in time. I have had success w/ beating HITH w/ an oscar, so I will do everything I can to cure this fish.
Will I have to keep him separate from my other cichlids after he is cured?

do u have a pic? my green sev looks like he mite be starting to get HITH too. how did u treat it? i bought some powder meds but havent started the process yet because im going away this weekend (perfect timing i know). my friend said it could its sensory holes but i doubt it, not sure what those look like tho lol

I don't have a pic, because he hides a lot. I am treating w/ API powder meds, which sounds like what you have. You just follow the instructions. You will also want to feed vitamin rich foods or soak foods in liquid viatmins. Your freind is right and you want to treat the fish ASAP before it gets really bad. If you wait too long the fish will die and if you catch it too late your fish will have scars that never heal. Here is a pic of the 13'' oscar I had, and this is what happens when you catch it too late.

That's bull from that lfs. Like the fish got HITH in the week you have had it. I'd be irked.

Yes I am alittle pissed. I buy most of my fish from this LFS, and it is only the sals I have had this problem w/. Maybe it is from the breeder they get these sals from? I had bought another female sal from a petco and kept her in a 55g w/ a firemouth for years but the FM killed her one night. I have no luck w/ sals :(
