I went to a local LFS today and came across a tank of 1"-2" Pink Fenestratus. I purchased two, not really knowing much about them. I just didn't want to pass up on cichlids that I never see in the LFS near me. The Pink Fenestratus tank was beside another tank of Synspilus. I wanted to get one of the 5" Synspilus but I wasn't sure how the two would work together in my tank. I've been doing some research since I saw them in the store, on the way home, and since they've been in the tank. Do any of you guys know what I can expect from these Fenestratus? Should I get the Synspilus too? Any advice or feedback is appreciated.

I reacted the same way when I saw pink fenes. My LFS has quality fish but rarely anything special or hard to find. I randomly picked up 1 of these guys. Like $13. Turned out to be my favorite fish in my tank. He does get a little aggressive with the females(which im removing soon). Every week he just gets pinker and pinker too. Alot of personalty in him and he eats like a nut.
Syn. is a good tank mate as long as you have the tank space they need. Im getting a Bifa soon with my pink fene and dempsey.
Post pics, theres not too much info online about these guys. The only ones ive seen came from rapps, and mine look nothing like them. I can post a pic of mine if youd like.

Thanks for the info. I didn't find a whole bunch of info on them either. I'll post some pics as soon as my wife returns with the camera. They fit right in with everything else so far. No aggression from the others at all. I'll go back for the Syn. as soon as I can.

my male fenestratus as he got older turned into one of my most aggressive ca cichlids(but was one of the prettiest)i can tell you they grow fast and will eat pretty much anything, not yo picky about ph just keep your water clean and they will do ok,nedd alot of room. i also have synspilums this is my absolute favorite fish big and beautiful and not to aggressive(unless it has to be)should get along with your fene as long as the syn is larger,if the fene is larger it will dominate the syn, both are easy to care for and you will enjoy them both. I dont have the pink fenesstratus any more but i do have another variety of fenestratus( sp. catemaco) will post pics of them later on to night when i get home.(need any more info pm me i will be glad to help)btw my sp. catemaco fenestratus are a wild caught breeding pair, have fry also

Thank you for sharing your experience with this species, Buddha and FishingOut. I'm definitely taking in as much information as possible. I tried to get pictures of the two Fenes but they will not hold still. This is their first day in the tank and they are very busy searching every nook and cranny of their new home. I'll try again tomorrow after they've had time to settle. They both have a black horizontal line going down their side. One actually is darker above the horizontal line. I know descriptions don't make up for pictures but I'm trying. Since they are so small I think I will add a few more plants and rocks for cover.

here is my wild caught sp. catemaco fenestratus(breeding pair)

I picked up a 3" Synspilus today and a Feather Fin for my wife's tank. The Fenes. and the Syn are doing well. They actually swim and feed together. I will have pics of the Syn tomorrow but the Fenes are something else. They are so small and quick. They won't sit still for any shots. I'm really glad I went and picked him up. I like the change in my stock. I better because this will be my dedicated stock until they die off of old age!

you will enjoy the synspilum as it grows,it is one of my most beautiful fish in my collection. the first and last pics are my female the second pic is one of my males.
