So, my old canister filter for my 55g tank started leaking badly. My new canister filter just came today. I have it all hooked up now and started thinking about how the new one won't have any bacteria built up in the bio yet. Is this going to be a problem for awhile? Any advice on what I should do? Or won't it really have an effect?
F.Y.I. I have a 6inch Electric Blue Jack Dempsey in there and it is not planted.

If it's not too late, squeeze out your old filter media into the tank.

I wouldn't worry much if that is the only fish you have in the 55. You will have some BB in the substrate, etc. Keep an eye on your parameters to be safe though.

Good luck!

Not sure how long the bacteria will live without water in my old filter, but it's been since Sunday that it hasn't been hooked up. To long to throw some of the old media in there?

Yep, I wouldn't do it now. Have you done a water check this evening?

Sounds like you have it under control, good luck :)

The readings all a tad high. Definately going to do a quick water change. Thanks for all the replys

Since the new filter need to get seeded do not do a water change. The water already has good bacteria in it. It will take just a little longer but your okay.

You can dose your tank with Prime whenever the readings start to climb. Prime makes ammonia and nitrites non-toxic to fish, but the bacteria can still consume it, so they aren't starved of their food and can repopulate much more quickly than if you do a bunch of large water changes.

No, water isn't cycled. There may be some stray bacteria floating around, but it's not gonna make a difference.
