I just cleaned my Fluval FX6 after the PH started to rise. The dirtyest part was the very top sponge. I replaced the first filter which was previously UGF gravel with SeaChem's matrix. I know it's supposed to have the most surface of any bio-media but my mind keeps telling me they just look like rocks. Won't the little tubules get clogged eventually? Also I change my filter once a month and it's quite involved. Do you think I could get away with just just rinsing out the top sponge?

Man I have 2 on my 180 that have no sponges and only bio media and only clean about once a year.... My other is on a 125 which I clean every couple months... I don't use the sponges or carbon. Only bio media... All comes down to water changes

Yes, but it would probably need to be done on a weekly basis, maybe more maybe less, depending on how quickly your tank gets "dirty"

I've been curious about doing this well. So you run your fx6 without all the white sponges and fill all three baskets with bio media? Do you run any type of mechanical filtration before the bio media?

Nope I haven't used carbon or anything else for probably 8 years I'd say in any filter. All I use is ceramic fluval media.... No white sponges since in my tanks they clog to quick.
