Over there
I've never owned a lungfish before and don't know much about them. I've done some research but nothing has answered the main question I have. Exactly what makes a lungfish a fish? To my understanding, the main physical property that distinguishes a fish is that they have gills for their entire lives. So since these obviously have a lung, why are they considered a fish? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question. Just nothing I've read has answered this.

Bichirs do have lungs too so why are they called fish? Not many knows about that bichirs actually do have a pair of lungs rather than a swim bladder. Same goes with lungfish they have pair of lungs except for australian lungfish which only have one. I know you did a lot of research but did u research on how fish became amphibians? How the elovution of the first land vertebrate able to come up and walk on land? Their are many fish during prehistoric times that have lungs. Those lungs are actually modified swim bladder that helps them to take air from the water surface to absorb more exygen. The modification of the swim bladder to lungs was actually another survival method to survive in stugnant water with low oxygen level as well as to avoid predators by temporary going out of water. Their are other air breather fish that acts the same way but do not have true lungs but just actually a modified swim bladder that acts as lungs such as the gars the bowfin, featherbacks, arapaima and african aros as well as aba aba. Only the bichirs and the lungfish posses true lungs similar to land animals. Also lungfish do have gills their entire lives BTW.

I had no idea that bichirs had lungs! I thought they had specialized swim bladders as well like the other fish you mentioned. I guess the stuff I read sucked cuz none of them mentioned them having gills. They would just repeatedly call them fish. Thanks King-eL!

Evolution at its finest, forgot to mention that they go into a dormant state during the dry season. And cocoon themselves in their own mucus, along with mud. Then wake up to the rainy seasons
and its amazing to see. All it takes is water and they activate lol

Ya I've heard about that! Some frogs do that to when it's too hot or when it snows! Do they require that dry period in aquariums? I want to get 1 eventually. Just not sure when.

I don't believe so, and I would just go for it. Not a hard fish to keep, just very predatory and have know to eat their tank mates... So choose wisely.
