Just got a 125 gallon tank any good filtration ideas??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would get two Fluval FX5's, your water will be very clear ! Even 1 FX5 and a couple AquaClear110 hang on back filters will be great though. FX5's are around $230 I believe

Hello; Being new to the hobby you are faced with some choices likely made with out enough information or background knowledge. Perhaps a first step is to get a general idea of what you hope to keep in the tank and how much of a load the filter systemwill need to deal with. Many use the size of a tank as a guide for the needed filtration, I tend to try to match a filtration system to the size and type of fish and to live plants or no plants.
There is also the level of expense you are willing (or able) take on. Some like the high power and expensive filter systems and if you look at the vendor websites you will see how much they can cost to buy and there is also a not inconsiderable operation cost to some systems. While the high power systems will work well, they may not be actually necessary.
I have been at this hobby for a while and have seen the filtration systems evolve from a time when it was common to have no filtration system at all to what is commonly available now. Yes, we would run tanks with only lights and gravel and not even an air pump. So, there is a wide range of options and the nice thing is that you can start with a lesser system and add on as your needs change.

An example of a some what low cost setup is simply sponge filters run by an air pump. I have run many tanks with only sponge filters and from evidence in posts on this forum so have others. To that I have sometimes added a hang on the back filter (HOB) to give some mechanical filtration. I ran a 125 gallon with a undergravel filter from a 20 gallon tank buried in one corner, a couple of sponge filters buried in other places, a few bubblers and one HOB. The tank ran well for several years untill it broke and this was during a stage when I tended to stock pretty heavy.

I have run tanks with HOB filters rated for much smaller tanks. It depends much on how many fish or how nasty they are. I have in the last few decades tended to much lighter stocking and have found filtration demand to be greatly reduced. What kind and how many fish do you hope to keep in the tank?

Right now I have two marine land 50-70 gallon, 350 GPH filters in a 125 gallon tank. I have a mixture total of 9 African peacocks/haps/African cat. All sizes vary from 3' to 5'. I also have a big air bubbler in their also for more oxygen.ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1342121683.104524.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1342121699.143695.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1342121717.621764.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1342121738.810297.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1342121757.689008.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1342121782.768211.jpg
