Just got a baby silver aro today that is about 2.5". He was $12. He ate at the LFS, and ate in my 30 gallon about 3 hours after I got him. I tried frozen krill with no go. He took live brine shrimp. What should I get him feeding on? I refuse to give him guppies. He's way too small to eat a rosey. My aro I had in the past was on live from the LFS, got him off it by feeding him crickets then eventually mixing pellets w/the crickets. What should I do with this little dude? He's shorter and thinner than my pinkey finger! How often should I feed, 2-3x a day? Thanks for any help.

Blackworms are a favorite of all fish.

Try getting him on pellets though. You can use Hikari Gold Baby Pellet, they'll definitely be small enough for your aro. Just mix it in with the brine shrimp, and slowly increase the amount of pellets while decreasing the amount of brine shrimp. He might show some resistance at first, but he'll crack.

Two times a day sounds good.

Freeze dried bloodworms about 4-5 time a day. Arowana that small have a hard time with pellets, their mouth is still soft and they can't break the pellets unless they are soft. Within a month or so at about 3.5-4" it will readily take pellets. I have found larger broken pellets/foodsticks work better then the small pellets that are bite size.

Good luck and be prepared, your new arowana will grow very quickly.

That's awesome! Congrats! My 3" was supposed to be in Tuesday, but didn't make the shipment. He should be in this coming Tuesday. I am anxious to get him!

Good luck with yours :)

Wow that was quick, unlike the cichla forum where it takes two days to get a response. Hmmm, freeze dried bloods... would frozen work? Cuz thats what my cichla eat so I always have them. I also have frozen prawns but theyre too big. Will hikari bio gold work? (red package)

I know bderick suggested against pellets, and he honestly has more arowana experience than I do, but in my case... the baby pellets are tiny. The aro doesn't even seem to have to crush them, they just swallow them.

If you use frozen, just make sure they're completely thawed.

Frozen may work once the arowana is eating eagerly, but the frozen will sink to the bottom of the tank. Freeze dried work best because they float, and are easily removed later on if uneaten

this is the same method i use for my small aros. it is the best way to go. they also seem to take to foodsticks faster then other pellets aswell as the ease of them eatting the broken pellet. then when they are growing you can increase the broken pellet chunk size to meat the aros intake needs. once it is able to take a full pellet then you wont have to teach it to like anoth kind of pellet. once it is on full pellets thats when you could try hand feeding small shrimp parts. i genneraly start hand feeding market shrimp (borken into very small chunks) off my finger tips to my aros when they are in the 3" range. little before they can take a full pellet, but then they will be on market shrimp aswell. it seem easier to get them on shrimp when they are smaller and will swim past your finger to get it. at first they don't like to get things off the bottom. even still mine will take some off the bottom, but stops 9 times out of 10 2/3's of the way down and look for something else.

just feed with whatever he will eat for now.
blood warm works wonder on my case, then again i own him when he was about twice the size of urs. frozen would be better compare to dried frozen, but its hard to clean up the left over that sunk to the buttom, unless u have buttom feeder to go with it
