LFS "Aquatics and Exotics" in Cincinnati had a "true RT." I asked them if it was a true Festae. They said it was. I knew it wasn't. No Y bar, and the eye on the tail is all Mayan. Not to mention the coloring. But it was a nice fish, and they didn't want much for it. So I got it knowing it was a Mayan. Plus, I REALLY just needed to get something in the tank with the GT before he got a bit bigger and claimed the whole tank as his.
BTW.....REALLY cool store, and good guys to deal with (very personable, and nice.....even if they couldn't tell a Mayan from a Festae
). They've got a 17,000 gal blak tip shark tank with 3 males and a female along with a big grouper. Tons of odd ball cichlids and things you don't see very much.
Anyway, got her in the tank, and I'm pretty excited to see if she'll get a decent red hue to her over time as she gets less stressed and feeds on a good diet. She's 5" and in with my 7" male JD and my 3.5" GT.
I had the GT in the tank all by itself. So it still thought it was tough stuff when the JD and Mayan got put in there last night. The GT's been flaring at the others, then runs and hides. He tried lip locking with the JD, but as soon as the JD got close, the GT figured it was close to getting swallowed, and ran before doing anything. The JD established himself as the top fish and nobody messes with him at all anymore, and he just swims around not going after anyone at all. The GT is still flaring at the Mayan a bunch though. I think it want's the #2 spot. We'll see how it turns out. Those two lip locked last night and the Mayan came out on top. But the GT is still not happy. Once the GT gets bigger, I think he'll be on top. But he's got a ways to go.
Anyway, may have some pics later today. But I might wait until the Mayan is a bit less stressed and the tank heirarchy has been established.
