Ok so i just got this new 240gal 8x2x2. I'm going to be housing my common wolf fish, xingu I pike, arowana, 3 P bass, ornate bichir, large pleco. I may also add a large catfish as well. Previously I've used 2 filters with all my tanks over 100 gal, but I've never had a tank over 140, so i was looking for little advice. My 140 planted has 2 fluval 404s and it works great. I'm a big fan of over filtration, if there is such a thing, but that could start to get costly, so i figure i should find a nice middle ground as a plan to continue to get bigger tanks.

My first thought was to go with the Fluval FX5 it is rated for 400gal systems and $300 seems pretty fair. But maybe i should stick two seperate filters at opposite ends of the tank since it is 8ft long.

What do you guys think?

my personal recommendation for anything 180gals and up is to have a wet/dry filter accompanied buy a good canister...

these would be my two choices

option 1: kinda of expensive

i would do 3 fx5s on there it would give you roughly 1800 gph. 7.5x turn over. i would mod 2 of them to be only bio and one to be only mech. you can signifigantly increase the amount of bio media by modifing it.

option2:

1 fx5 for mech and a wet/dry with 1200+ gph

wet dry 1200gph+ and 2x XP4 imo

i got a almost same size ( 210) with a 40gallon sump,return pump 1200gph ( before head loss) ehiem 2026& 2028 for mech

If your tank is not drilled, 3 fluval fx5s would be good imo. If you have a little more $$$ I would get 2 eheim 2262 filters; they are great. If you are in the annapolis/baltimore area PM me as I have a fx5 and eheim 2262 for sale that are only about a year old.

I love my FX5's. Get on Ebay at the end of the auctions (the auctions are non-stop). I got all 3 of mine that way for $200 each and that included shipping.

imo you should get 2 fx5s and as many ac110s you can fit and youll be set. but the wet/dry filter and the fx5 is the ultimate setup.

What is an AC110?

The tank used to be salt water, it has an overflow, but all the bulkheads are sealed. Should i utilize the overflow with a sump? My salt water tank is only 40gal and i dont use a sump, so i'm not to firmiliar with them, but I'm sure i could figure it out
