just set up my new fx5 to go along with my aqua one 1200 ant 2 med size internal filters on my 48" x 18" x 24"high dat growout tank:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

which puts me on just over 5000l/h (1100uk gal) turn over on a 340l(75uk gal) tank:D:screwy:

that is roughly a 14.7 times an hour turnover:ROFL:

within an hour of me starting the fx5 my 7 dats (2"-5") were fully stable and all out in the current, i have quite a few hiding spots so thats the first time they have all been out together since i got them:headbang2

now all i need is a good camera lol

Ummmmm. Why? I never get why people do this. You could probubly filter that tank with 4-6 cycles per hour. There is a point when to much filtration just won't help.

i want to mature the fx5!!!
and i wont be too much overfiltered when i put the 2 cannisters on my 150ish gal upgrade tank

plus i'm very heavily stocked!!!

Datnioides/Coius microlepis indo dat, IT 2" and 5"
Datnioides/Coius campbelli New Guinnea tigerfish, NGT 3"
Datnioides/Coius quadrifasciatus Silver Tigerfish, 2 at 3"
Datnioides/Coius undecimradiatus Thin Bar Dat, 3"
Mastacembelus erythrotaenia Fire Eel 10"
Pimelodus pictus Pim 6"
Lepisosteus oculatus Spotted Gar 8"
Polypterus senegalus Senegal Bircher 3 at 4"-5"
Panaque nigrolineatus Royle Plec 2"

and the tank is used as a sump for my map turtle

will take both internals out next week.

imo its much petter to have too much filtration than risk it with less!!

good for you

To cycle the Fx5, put your old media in it from the other filters. This works in about..... 10 minutes and the filter is cycled. Having to much filtration area only spreads out the bacteria so when you remove filters you could have an ammonia spike since there will be very little bacteria in the filter compaired to when its the only filter.

I love it when people say this. I then ask, how were your water stats before you added extra filtration? Usually they say, perfect.... then I say.... so your not helping any are you.

I am sorry to say it like this, but you are wrong. First of all, he might want to put the FX5 on a different tank so he cannot switch all the media.

Second of all, when you add more space for the bacteria, the colony does not change it size, it just spreads out. This is actually better for maturing new filters for other tanks because then you take less bacteria away, less likely causing a minicycle. When you take away media that is more populated with bacteria it has a higher chance of causing a mini-cycle.

Let me stumble off my soapbox now... ;)

I never said ALL the media. If he adds media from other filters into the Fx5 and puts the fx5 on another tank immediantly when there is a small bio load, the filter will cycle much faster than waiting for bacteria to populate in a filter which has zero bacteria.

You contridicted yourself in more ways than one. First of all, adding more filters or let me be more specific, more area for bacteria to grow, will allow the bacteria to spread out and thin out in the more accumulated areas. So when installing a new filter, your adding more surface area which you expect to have bacteria on eventually which means that bacteria in the other filters have thinned out because there is less food.

So, when removing the Fx5, you will be removing bacteria that has been needed before adding the fx5 so now NEW bacteria has to grow in the previous filters to keep up with the bio load. You get me now?

Way to flame a guy for spoiling his fish. I wouldn't take it to this level personally but his intentions are good! I have a 300 GPH mechanical only HOB filter an undergravel with power heads and an eheim 2215 on my 55 gallon. Better safe than sorry.
