I have a cichlid that's been not eating for about 2.5-3 weeks and has been ultra fat in the face. Just caught it and put it in a bowl and helped it spit out 30-40 new fish... now this is my first time breeding what do we feed them and did they come to early or anything? They definately look like fish though with round egg like bellies. Also do i want a filter and heater or not at this stage my house sits at 70 degrees? they're Metriaclima Zebra lundu

definitely not early in the sound of it!
what size bowl?
id say heating probly not but give them a filter .
preferably transfer to a 10-15 gal

then id say heating would be needed.
and make sure to take good care of water ph and and all that stuff

otherwise they fend for themselves anyhow!
Power to you!
ps you will probly loose a couple of those. but dont be dishartend nature is cruel at times.

thanks for the reply i put them in a 10 gallon tank have the heater running on it but not the filter i'm worried they'd get sucked into it... it's a hang on back filter about 4 inches from the bottom though so i guess they stay at the bottom anyways

Get sponge filter at the store...Sponge filters cost less than $15.........With a sponge filter you will not need to worry about the fry being sucked up.........Also, purchase another 10g, usually they go for $10-20..........Put half the fry in one tank and leave the adults in another(with some fry)..........The ammonia level in the small 10g will reach a critical level with all those fry in there...........

well I've had the fish now for about 2 days and only 11 are alive now... I expected a few to die but honestly at this point today I've been losing 1 per hour or more I don't expect any of them to grow up think they'll all die in the next few hours and there seems to be nothing i can do...

and not even 10 minutes from my last post I'm now down to single digits... guess the next batch I'll just let the mother eat cause I'm obviously doing it wrong

You mean they still had the egg sack on them? If so, they came out too early. You would need to still tumble them gently at that stage. If they sit on the bottom to long they could fungus. Or if your throwing food in there, they wont eat it. The egg sack is their food until its gone.
The left over food has to be taken out or the ammonia spike will kill the fish.
You must continue to run a filter on this tank or change the water at least 2x a day especially if your trying to feed!
Also the HOB is fine, just put a sponge over the intake and the fry wont get sucked into it.
