So I went and bought a 165 gallon tank today. I was only interested in the tank but the seller said she had two Oscars with it.

I arrive and look at the set-up. The two huge Red Oscars looked almost 'bleached.' I have never seen two faded and washed out Oscars in my life and I've seen a few in my time.
She included a bunch of supplies but there was no feed, I asked what she'd been feeding them and she said [of course.] they have always ate Goldfish and the last time they were fed was about a month ago when she dropped a dozen in with them.
I got home and decided just for the hell of it I'd test the water. The PH was around 4,7 and the Ammonia level was off the chart. It's really a shame these type of people are allowed into pet shops to buy something and end up torturing.

did you take them?

that's sad. My mom thinks im crazy for changing the water in my tank every 2 days ( just 10% ).

I said to her, " mom how you feel if you lived in your house for a week without taking out the trash and without flushing the toilet.. ? yeah i though so mom.

Your mom only thought your were crazy cause she couldn't get you to clean your room or do the dishes when you were a kid and now you volunteer to clean someone elses houses every two days.

My mom laughed at me too. She thinks its nuts that for years as a kid I was hell to get to clean my room but my fish live in a tank that I schedule cleanings for.

poor oscars. its saddly seen so often though. oscars=20-55g=feeders for life. I hope u got them good luck with them :D

Yeah, I took them.
The water level was about 10'' low so I'd venture to say there's been no recent water changes. I put them in my big tank and they're already getting color back and seem happier.

I was just telling a friend the same thing. I have them in a free tank now and trying to figure what I'm going to do with them. They're slowly getting their color back and starting to look/act like Oscars again.

I got them to eat some fillets and they're starting to move around. I don't have a memory card or I'd take pics of these. Think of a Red Oscar and where the red coloring should be, it's almost white/gray.

I did my good deed for the day I suppose and was rewarded. Among the many items included were three huge powerheads. I put two in my Piranha tank and they absolutely love it.
