Just how nasty is the Red Terror(festae). I've been reading about them and they sound pretty cool. I'm a long way from getting a pair (a breeding pair) but am seriously considering them to be the next fish I get. I have a 120 gal. and from what I've been reading they reach a max size of about 7"-10". I don't mind keeping them by themselves if tank mates would be out of the question but would like to have some sort of schooling fish with them. I would appreciate any input or comments that you could give me.

pretty nasty when full grown

They are territorial, but not more so than other Amphilophus. In my opinion, what sets this fish apart from the others is how powerfully they're built. They're such stout fish and they grow so large. Their body type and size coupled with the Amphilophus pugnaciousness makes them quite a handful.

I have fallen in love with this fish over the past several months. I have not attempted to keep them with anything other than their own species and scavengers. They seem to tolerate each other well, so long as there are no pairs. As a matter of fact, I am able to keep large Cory aneus with them and they don't bother them a bit.

Truly a spectacular fish.

I'm only a relative beginner with this species, i've had my pair for a little over a year. They are currently at about 7.5" and 5.5" and housed in a divided 120g. The female is still relatively peaceful but the male is growing more and more aggressive as every month rolls by. I have kept variuos C/A and S/A cichlids over the years and am finding this species to be the most challenging in terms of aggression.

hi ya, male festaes can get to 18" in a large tank but females stop at about 12" mostly, i had one in my 125 with my oscars and a texas but he was only about 6" at the time, when adult i would keep them by themselves unless i had anything over 300 gallons:)

females 10-12, males 12-15

:iagree:

Your quoted Max size of 7" - 10" is a little off from what I have been told and heard.

Listen to carpediem among others, Rob know his s**t! Just wish he had Festae Jr's right now!
