My fem rd fader laid eggs last week. She was very protective of them and even tried to bite my hand during a water change! The eggs were never fertilized (no male). After one day a small percentage of the eggs turned white. More turned white over the next couple days and she apparently ate most of them. Do the eggs turn white because they weren't fertilized? I think they had fungus but I'm not sure what it looks like. How do you prevent fungus? Also can they tell which eggs are fertilized and remove the ones that aren't? How often will she lay eggs and what conditions (i.e. temp,ph,in tank w/males) will cause her to produce eggs? I just want to learn as much as I can about the breeding process BEFORE I make an attempt at breeding her so any input will be greatly appreciated!

Eggs will go white and fungus if not fetilised.. a good female will only eat the white ones.

Meth blue will prevent fungus.. so will salt to a point..

If you slowly drop your ph to 6.8 it is meant to be perfect, this makes the eggs easier to be fertilised.. temp around 28 - 30c
Put a male beside her with a devider in so they get used to eachother, then pull out the devider when her tube drops and see how they go together..
best to have a bare bottom tank with a pot base or plate in there with the female..

Eggs will fungus if they're not fertilized. Just keep doing what you're doing, keep the temp 82-84*, keep her fat, feed high protein foods, and get her a male. The toughest part will be pairing her with a male. Leave your pH alone. As long as the eggs are fertile don't worry about fungus, the parents should keep them clean but it might take them a few times to get it right.

Ok. Thanks for the info. I took her out of the divided 135 because I was scared the jag would knock it down and kill her.I put her in a 55 hex for now and I have a 75 gallon 48" x 18" to put her in when I find a male and a get stand made for the tank.
Does Menards or Lowes carry the terra cotta planter bottoms this time of year?
