He guys,

I just placed an order for a custom acrylic 60x30x22 tank (approx 170g) from a local builder. It will be by far the largest aquarium I've owned. It is not drilled and I don't really want to do a sump. I'm trying to stay budget friendly. In the past I've done sun sun canisters on my 75g along with sponge filters. I am leaning making this a simple planted tank, (anubias and java ferns only) hence the low tank height. I think I'll go with SA cichlids.

What should I do for filtration?

An fx6 is one of the best filters.

A fx4 is $20 less then the fx6 unless you're finding it somewhere else for a different price.
If you can wait I'd wait for black friday and get it then. The fx6 should get a big price drop.

Reading your post i'm guessing you're blowing all your beans on your tank, and that's why you want to stay budget friendly for the rest of the set up? Those cannisters are not cheap if you've not much left over. I would have got the guys to drill your tank and then got a cheap old tank off local ads to use as a sump. In case they haven't made your tank yet this could still be an option.

No, still got plenty of beans. I just see people putting several fx6s on 200 gallon tanks, with hob filters as well and it seems like overkill.

I mean what is really needed and what is just money wasted?

3 sun suns and a couple sponge filters is still less than an fx6.....

Would go with the 3 sun sun filters.
