Red Terror is a common name used for both mayans and festae. If you want festae, only ask for that name. The one you have is a mayan.
What he said.

I asked for Festae and still got a Uro, the full proof way to get a for sure Festae is a reputable breeder and source. Otherwise what happened to me will happen to many others.

Its so easy to tell the difference between a Uro (Mayan) and a Festae (Red Terror), the spot on the tail is higher on a Festae, thats all you need to know.

That being said, Mayans are beautiful fish in there own right and have lots of character so enjoy your new pet :)

I personally think they're hideous. As for ease of telling the difference, if you're inexperienced and buy them as fry... It's an easy mistake.

You will still have cases like yours but asking for Cichlasoma festae will greatly improve your chances as you are giving a scientific name and not a common name that applies to more than one fish. Also, if you ask for a Cichlasoma festae and get a Cichlasoma urophthalmus, you have recourse to get your money back etc. If you ask for a red terror, your chances are much higher in getting a urophthalmus and you have no recourse at all as the general term "red terror" applies to both festae and urophthalmus.

I think both are different and both are cool.. But Festaes are more striking in beauty. Mayans got the cool stripes.

And I'll guess female due to the black on the dorsal.
