Isn't this kind of harsh?

5.51. Northern Pike.
No northern pike, dead or alive, may be released into any water at any time. All northern pike taken shall be killed immediately by removing the head and shall be retained by the angler. The angler shall notify the Department that he/she has taken and possesses a northern pike by calling the Department’s CalTIP telephone number (1-888-DFG-CALTIP) as soon as possible, but not more than 24 hours after taking the northern pike. The angler shall maintain the head and body of the fish in a refrigerated or frozen condition, whenever possible, until the Department collects the northern pike.

I haven't googled the fish yet but knowing what kind of fish pike are, they aren't really a problem like snakeheads are.....right?

i don't get why you have to do that, or like keep it because it would just take up cooler space

Good job on reading and learning the regulations. Many anglers are either too stupid or lazy to do so.
When Mr.DFG agent comes to ticket you, he will not accept "I didn't know the regulations" as an excuse. Nor will the judge for that matter.

Some of the laws are down right stupid, but law is law.

haha thanks

my biggest concern is the fact that keeping a trash fish in a cooler that i have to give away anyways takes up my cooler space

northern pike are this fish...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_pike

they are voracious predators and have bit me when fishing in Minnesota but then I ate them so it is even. I just think they dont want predators to be introduced and it makes sense. The fish is a NA fish and perfectly designed to run California's lakes as the apex freshwater predator. But people did introduce them to some small areas since they get to 25Ibs and can be fun as hell to catch, but thank god they aren't good lake hoppers like snake heads.

oh ok, i thought they were native but being introduced it makes sense, i was wondernig, could bichirs make a threat if htey got releaseed since they can technically lake hop like snakeheads

I live in Cali and i know this regulations. Its good that there shouldnt be any Pikes here. PIKES ARE MEAN!!! ;) But then it sucks also cause you will never catch one here in CA.

so if u catch one u cant even make it ur dinner ? :| thats sad.... i think if u catch one u have to kill it, n watever u do afterward doesnt matter, isnt that enuf already.... cuz calling n freezing n waiting for collect seems like a real hassle
