is this possible.tested with api liquid test kit.was on 50 ppm last week.but cleaned my fx5 which i think everyone see really really dirty.and 4 days later nitrate is on 0 ppm ?

uh, no it doesn't sound good. How stocked is your tank? Cleaning a filter would reduce the addition of new nitrates to your tank, but it wouldn't eliminate nitrates already in the water unless you did a 100% water change.

I would test again, failing that, get a new test kit. Test for ammonia to see if you crashed your cycle and have to start over.

just cleaned filter with fish water, and did 50% water change.its a new api kit exp 12/2017.i tested it twice.will test ammonia now.i let you know.

Maybe it's more like 5 PPM, but the readings are saying 0? Not sure how it could really be 0, barring a couple 90% changes. Not trying to suggest a problem with the tank, just that the test could be slightly off.

If you have something that adsorbs nitrates, it's also possible that the tank readings will start ratcheting up soon.

isn't the goal 0?

I think most people try to keep it under 20 or 10... A decently stocked tank is almost impossible to keep at zero, unless you have a ton of live plants using up the nitrates as they are produced, but I think that is unrealistic. If you change so much water to keep it at 0 you probably wouldn't have a very healthy beneficial bacteria colony.

It was unusual the test worked last week, but you should definitely not be reading 0. If you changed 50% of the water, your nitrates should be 25ppm plus any new nitrates that were added in the meantime even with a clean filter.

Unless I'm missing something, hopefully others will chime in.
