just to sand confused

So last night I finally switched to pool filter sand grade #20 it looks good and the sand isn't very fine. I herd u have to stir the sand once in awhile but I also herd with pool filter sand you don't have too since it not as fine as aquarium sand and its more of fine gravel

So can anyone help me out? Do I have to stir the pool filter sand as if its fine sand or treat it like gravel and just vac it

Stirring is really only necessary if the sand is over 2" deep. I just keep a plastic fork lying around and during water changes I run the tines of the fork through the sand.
