I have a jardini arowana of about 5"-6". He's in a community tank with 3 Koi fish that are all above 6" with the biggest at about 8"...yes I didn't say that wrong, they're koi. The tank is a 30 gal and it's more or less a nursery tank until it gets to a healthy size and I can put it and my koi into my 180. It's been raised since about 2 inches with the koi and although they're of completely opposite worlds they get along well. It swims peacefully with the koi side by side. Infact sometimes the koi playfully nip on it's side and it returns the favor. I don't know if this is aggressive behavior but to me it looks friendly. They eat together and at night they rest together. When I had asked many LFS if this would be possible, they all told me that it was going to be an impossible attempt. It's worked up to now. Now as it gets bigger, I start to worry. Many people talk about the unavoidable 8" jardini that turns into a raging killer. I would hate to come home one night from work to 3 dead koi and a angry looking jardini, but I also don't want to split them up as they've all grown up together.

I actually plan to upgrade 30 to 55 to 75 and to my 180 as a final. It might be a long time before they actually go into the 180. Should I really just go ahead and put them into the 180?

oh boy, unfortunately your koi wont grow that well in a tank that small without water changes at least every other day, theyre like big goldfish, produce a lot of waste. I hope that it doesnt stunt your aro's growth either. I have similar sized koi in a 55 and water filtration was a nightmare before I figured it out. Although I do not have an arowana, I doubt that he'll start attacking the koi, firstly they occupy different levels in the water, the aro stays on top and looks for food from the top.

btw, what do you feed them? they obviously do not have the same dietary needs? which one gets compromised?

The koi swim in any level of the tank and the jar doesn't mind. They do occupy different water levels but I hardly see them far from each other. Periodically the koi will go to the bottom to gulp some gravel but they return to mid/top lvl with my jar. I feed them both a combination of frozen bloodworms, koi floating pellets and arowana sticks. The koi eat just about anything they can fit in their mouth and the jar loves the bloodworms. Once it's bigger, I'll feed it market prawn as everyone seems to have great success with that. Also my water is very clear and clean. I use a 70 aquaclear for the 30 gal and water quality has never been a problem.I do weekly water changes and I've never had a problem. My 180 also happens to be empty and catching dust in my basement. The main reason I don't want to upgrade to it right away is that moving it is troublesome and frankly I can't do it alone. Also I'm lazy. I do have a 55 with a mid sized flowerhorn and a empty 75 in the living room.

Set up the 75gal and have someone help you set up the 180gal and then in a month move the Aro from the 75gal to the 180gal. Im afraid that your Jars first victim could be the FH or your FH could kill your Jar

I'd love to have your problem, I hope you find someone to help you. Personally I think setting up the aquarium can sometimes be even more fun than fishkeeping.

i don't expect the koi to last with the jar...that "playful nipping" it is play for the koi, but just a sizing them up from the jar...one day in the not to distant futrue i for see a thread titled "JAR KILLS 2 KOI AND MUTALATES ANOTHER!!"...i aslo would have gone with the 180gal to start as it may have prolonged your koi's life span with the jar...some can keep jars with other fish, but if yours is nipping now it is already heading down the path of distruction...
