hey....i was wonderin how hybrids occur in the wild....cuz.....like there are diff species so....how the heck do they manage to mate?.....i know that the gator gar always has a part to play so was wonderin how thay breed......sounds totally wrong when u think of it....why do these hybrids occur...how they occur....these are some burning Q's

even though they're different species, they are close enough related to hybrized and produce viable offspring.

I suppose the alligator gars must be still a relatively young fish in order to breed with other smaller gars. Perhaps a population is isolated in a certain waterway with a mixture of two species of gars.

There are no comprehensive studies done about this, so no one knows the exact details.

This is true as far as wild hybridization, there is little detail or information.

It is not out of the realm of possiablity for this to occur when populations are overlapped and sharing the same waters. this though could be intentional or incidental. It would not be a suprise if some Shortnosed just happened to be spawning while Alligators or longnosed were, that there would be the probability of Alligator sperm cells reaching shortnosed or longnosed eggs or vice versa. This is a little studied subject but one I'm really interested in and have looked at very seriously.

As for eggs stripped from a female and combined with male gametes this usually results in viable fry. This is how the once available croc gars were created. These were not natural hybrids but very much intentional man made hybrids.
