why are baby P bass so hard to classify? i always see tos off ppl trying to get their baby PB identified and the only replys they get is "to small to tell" or something like that. what makes p bass so hard to identifiy at a youg age? they must be SOME distinguishing features between species?

When it comes to Mono, Ocell, and Orino...anything that is about 2" or less, they really do look the same. The only one that's pretty easy to distinguish are Temensis. They hvae a straight bar going through them while the other 3 have the same spotting.

Yeah, I wonder the same things also. I would like to know the differences between the species. What identifiable marks do you go by, characteristic traits, etc. When I just start trying to match them up to different pictures, after a while they all begin to look alike. I am brand new to pbass and I'm sure there are others out there that have the same questions.

I still have a hard time telling the differences between Monos and Ocells. I just started to keep Pbass again and it's kind of weird. It's only been about 2 years and it seems that all these "new" Pbass are on the market now. Azul, Intermedia, Kalberi, Pinima, etc. I just always remembered Mono, Ocell, Tem, and Orino.

I have found that the only real way is to own all these types in order to distinguish the diffrences. At such a small size and being that cichla don't all show there respective identifying markings until say 5'' that it is not as easy as just a glance. I will always wait until I see the coloration of fish to truely identify it as Mono, Ocella, or Orino. The only sure bet as i see it is to have a supplier who is 100% about his product and then you still have the to wait until the markings of the Sp. is identifyable. I am at the moment finally seeing the head shape diffrences as well as body shapes of my cichla to make it a little easier for me to ID my selection. But this only comes from actuall experince. I have seen a lot of diffrences in my cichla at the moment but granted all of my youngins are just a year old. So I feel like patience is the order of the day unless you can trust your LFS or supplier.
