I was just sitting here wondering about the fry in my tank. I have a pair of fish that just had little ones and both of the parents are average looking. My question is : Can fry sometimes turn out to be more of a showpiece than the parents they came from?

Yes they can be. In all my my convict batches, the female fry have rivaled the original female. And by the way she is very colourful. But in most of my livebearing batches, the fry were much more drab than the parents.

Yup.
You can end up with some very showy fish with from average fish, but parents that were high quality in the first place will be more likely to have good fry and more of them.
In the latter case the breeder has done the work for you and weeded out the substandard fish until they end up with consistently good specimens.
