Oh yeah that would work but only on a huge system and as mechanical filtration only. You would need to run a wet/dry or seperate cannister filter for that.
You would lose a lot of water during a backwash, which is how you clean the filter media in pool filters.
Not a good solution for systems under 2000 Gallons I would say in my humble opinion, unless you change out the pump for one that wont push more than 5 or 6 times your system volume per hour.
