Where the sun don't shine
OK- so yesterday I received 3 baby bowfin from snookn21. First off, the fish were packed well, and arrived healthy looking and very active. I would definitely recommend this vendor to anyone...

With that being said, I know that bowfin when young, can be tricky to keep alive. I also know that they are very susceptible to parasites (tapeworms). My question to anyone with any experience is...should I treat for parasites now or wait until they get a little bigger? They are around 3 inches right now. I have read that they can be sensitive to meds at this size, but I also want to rid them of any parasites ASAP. I plan on treating with Prazipro...

The 2 I had would fight with eachother so maybe keep them seperate if you see torn fins. My little one died so I still have one. I treated him with parasite clear by jungle and I havnt seen him scraping against the rocks since. Mine is about 2in btw. He also is taking cut tilapia from my hand so he's doin good. Just make sure there eating, that's why my other small one died.

just posted on another thread, i've lost a total of 6 in the past.3 about 12 years ago and 3 about 3 years ago. these last ones were treated with prazipro, and died the same way. mouths agape and mucus just running off of them when i pulled them out of the tank. i've got 3 coming on Wed from TFD. supposed to be 4-6" so i home they are well started enough. this time, bigger tank, more filtration, supplemental areation , much cooler temps. good luck with your little ones.
