I have started a 125 gallon hap tank. I currently have in the 2 inch range 2-livingstonii, 1- venustus, 1- Borleyi, 1- deep water hap, and 1- Moorii blue dolphin. All are around 2 inches but my livingstonii are occasionally fighting and my question is is this a sign of both being males or would 2 females or male and female juveniles fight each other?

My guess would be two males. I have one 4" juvenile male Livingstoni. He's more like a docile swimming rock. He's getting thick and not particularly aggressive.

I'd agree that they are both most likely male. Females may scrap every now and then but not nearly as much as 2 males will. I would watch this behaviour as they grow up tho as these lil scraps may turn into full blown battles at some point.

I will I purchased them in hopes of having at least one male as they grow if it gets ugly I will return the odd man out to my lfs. Thank you!

For Malawi you would not want 2 of anything because 2 males will fight and 1m:1f is likely to end with the female dead. If there will be females, there should be 4 or more of them to spread the aggression.

They were purchased with the intention of returning one if not both if I didn’t have a male. I am doing an all male hap tank one of each species.

This is part of the growing pains and establishment of pecking order. My adult Stonii is a beast size size but more skiddish than anything I’ve ever kept. Docile is an understatement no doubt. As for your situation I would agree that it is more likely than not a dual male situation.
