So i just picked up a juvi green terror a few weeks ago from my lfs. It is about 3in long as of right now. When i first got it home i put it in my 40gal grow out tank with a mix of different fish. I want to say that when i first got the gt it was eating tropical mini pellets like the rest of the fish in the tank but i cant recall for sure. Well one day i realized that it wasnt eating anything and i noticed it had the stringy white poo, so first thing i thought was internal parasite. Also it was the only fish in the tank acting like this. So i quarentined it by it self in a 25gal tank. I have tryed the mini pellets, flake, frozen blood worms, and baby endlers. The gt will chase down and eat the endlers no prob but will not eat anything else. Not completly ruleing out internal parasites but sense it is eating live fish i feel like it dosnt have a parasite. Anyway out of all the tons of cichlids i have owned over the years i have never had one that will only eat live fish so this is new to me. Anyone have suggestions as to what i can do to get it to eat pellets.

White stringy poop means it has a parasite. As for only eating live I would stop offering it live until its consistently taking prepared foods

What meds do i need to use to get rid of the parasite, dont think any medicated food will work sense it wont eat anything but live fish.

Well i thought that white stringy poo didnt always mean internal parasite, i thought it was also due to a fish not eating, because i havent notice any stringy poo sense it has been eating the live fish. Not saying your wrong or anything but if it was an internal parasite wouldnt it be refusing to eat all together?

I do not necessarily think that white poo means it has an internal parasite. White poo could be an indicator, but sometimes it could be from a fish just not eating well. I have seen this in various fish in the past and when they started eating more consistently their poop went back to normal. If they are not consuming content then of course it is going to look like white, thin, and transparent poop because it lacks the content. If you stopped feeding your fish recently and that is the symptom you noticed, I would not worry about it, but definitely try to ensure he is getting nutrients somehow obviously because he or she needs to be healthy. If he or she starts eating consistently and the fish is still conveying those symptoms, then you maybe could assume parasites, and the fish may then need to be treated. Also if you was feeding feeder fish, then the chance if parasites tends to be increased, but considering what you mentioned, I would just be persistent with pellets or whatever to help ensure he or she is receiving nutrients and the stool should improve or appear more typical. Flakes would work too, but they just oftentimes to not provide enough bulk or content for most large cichlids mass. Might even try bloodworms, krill or something else similar to these to help the fish transition more efficiently. If that works, perhaps then try pellets. Whatever works for you. :)

Thanks for your reply, i know that the feeder fish are clean because i breed them here at home so they are good and i started the feeders after i notice my gt not eating other foods, ive tryed flake, pellets, blood worms with no luck, not sure what to do. Right now my gt has the stringy poo, but i havent feed it feeders in a few days and it still refuses to eat flake and pellets.

Another thing that makes me think its not a parasite is that in the grow out tank it was in (dont laugh) are a senegal bichir, a dragon goby, a goldfish, a koi, and none of them show signs of parasite.

You shouldn't see white, stringy feces every time your fish doesn't eat for a few days. If mine don't eat for a few days they just don't defecate at all.

If it were me, I'd treat for hexamita or intestinal parasites. I use pure powdered metronidazole for seven days. Bump the temp to 84F, add pure metro at 1/4 teaspoon per 10 gallons once a day, doing a 50% water change each day before redosing. Even if the fish starts eating during this time it's important to complete the treatment.

I have never seen a healthy SA cichlid reject frozen bloodworms. Even finicky wild-caught pike cichlids and filter feeders like Chaetobranchus eat frozen bloodworms. If your GT is refusing those even after fasting for a few days, I'd say he needs treatment.
