x2.

It will take about two weeks for it to hit 10" from 6" provided that the gar always has plenty of appropriate-sized feeders available and is not a runt or stunted. Based on reading about this gar in a previous thread, I'm pretty sure that the mentioned longnose gar is already stunted quite, though, but it's not the OP's fault for that (blame the LFS for that), so the growth rate may not be that fast.

LNG grow really fast at juvi stages, but 6 to 10" in two weeks is kind of a stretch and there are other factors involved. in the wild this is possible, but in captivity you have to powerfeed, keep warm temps, and maintain a lot of water changes. it can be done, but it's not average growth for YOY LNG.

either way, it won't take more than a month for the fish to reach that size is properly taken care of.

oh, and don't put it in the pond yet :) --

i hav to find sum1 who can sell them, the store put long nose for a needle nose :urked: how do they not have them when they have rbp, arowanas, and even butis butis???

It's tough to do, but it can be done.

Just to give you, the OP, an idea of the variable growth rates of YOY longnose gars in captivity, here's a list of the growth rates of the longnose gars that I got last summer:
  • 6/20/2010 (Day 1): I got four longnose gars; the largest is about 1.5" long while the smallest is about 0.5" long. All four gars are housed in a 10 gallon aquarium at room temperature (~74° F).
  • 6/21/2010 (Day 2): The smallest is cannibalized by the others while I'm at work, so I'm now down to three gars.
  • 7/7/2010 (Day 18): The two larger gars are moved to a 29 gallon aquarium while the smallest is kept by itself in the 10 gallon aquarium. Both aquariums are maintained at 78° F.
  • 7/13/2010 (Day 24): The three gars are now 6", 5.5", and 2.5" long. Length gains of approximately 4.5", 4.0", and 1.5", respectively, in 24 days.
  • 7/18/2010 (Day 29): The gars are now 8", 6.5", and 3" long. Length gains of approximately 2", 1", and 0.5", respectively, in 5 days. The fact that the smallest gar is a runt rather than stunted is now very obvious.
  • 7/27/2010 (Day 38): The gars are now 10", 9", and 3" long. Length gains of approximately 2", 2.5", and 0", respectively, in 9 days.
  • 8/4/2010 (Day 46): The largest gar is now 12"; I did not measure the other gars at this point in time. Length gain of 2" in 8 days.
  • 8/9/2010 (Day 51): I placed the largest two gars in my ~500 gallon goldfish pond. They were 14" and 12" long at the time. The largest gar grew 2" in 5 days while the other gar grew 3" in 13 days. I cease to measure the larger two gars for a period of a few months after this point. I did not measure the smallest gar at this time, but I did move it up to the 29 gallon aquarium.
  • 8/19/2010 (Day 61): The smallest longnose gar is now 6" long. Length gain of approximately 3" in 23 days.
  • 8/29/2010 (Day 71): The smallest gar is still 6" long. Length gain of approximately 0" in 10 days.
  • 9/15/2010 (Day 88): The smallest gar is now about 10" long. Length gain of approximately 4" in 17 days. This particular gar was sent to Madding on this day; he can provide further details as to its growth from Day 89 on.
  • 11/18/2010 (Day 152): I finally was able to measure my remaining two longnose gars. Both gars were approximately 16" long and were very plump (three times as thick as before) because they had spent the last few months bulking up for the winter. Length gains of approximately 2" and 4", respectively, in 101 days. Please note that gars stop focusing on growth and put more energy into putting on body mass once the water temperature begins to drop during the fall and cease to feed once the water gets fairly cold (not sure on the exact temperature) hence the relatively small length gains and large body mass gains.
  • 3/10/2011 (Day 264): The ice on the pond from winter had finally thawed, so I was able to capture and measure one of the two gars. The other gar evaded capture by darting under the output pipe for the pond pump. The one I managed to capture was still 16" long and had lost some overall body mass but not a significant amount. Length gain of 0" in 112 days; this result was expected considering that the gars had yet to begin feeding after winter.
As you can tell, they have variable growth rates even when kept under as close to the same conditions as possible.

I wish that I had thought to get their masses then, but I'll remember to do that and measure more regularly with the next batch of longnose gars come this summer.

Good luck with that; I had to catch my longnose gars myself.
