i was at the LFS the other day and was looking at some young JD (all between 2-3"). i noticed that some were a real rich dark pulple/black starting to show the blue/green scales they are know for, and others were significantly lighter, actually really pale almost greyish, but also starting to show nice scales. i was wondering if this is difference between males and felmales? or is this an indicator of which ones will be better looking when full grown?

At 3inches, you can probably start to sex them. From my experience, the dark ones and pale ones dont really determine the sex of the fish, however, the darker ones are the ones I prefer because when they get older, they tend to look better. The colors tend to stand out due to the darkness.

I suggest just looking for one with bright pearls, large pearls, and no body deformities.
