I have a question about the lugubris type pikes. I know the juvies have the spots and stipes pattern. But does that mean if a small pike looks like a venezuala juvie that it is a venezuala? I just got one that looks like the venezuala type but it is more yellow than the venezuala ones at the pet store. Peanut this is a question for you but anyone who knows can reply.
Thanks
Lindsey

Definately not a xingu 1. It looks like it could be a juvie marm, but not sure. It is only 2" and in a big tank so it is hard to get good pics.....

Crenicichla sp. 'venezuela' can look several ways as juv...some are more silver, others more bronzish/yellow. They won't be as intense as sp. 'xingu I' though. If you have Crenicichla marmorata or Crenicichla lenticulata, you will know it. There is no mistaking them! ;)

I doubt that it is a marm. Usually pikes or fish in general will always color up better when you get them home. They are usually crowded or bullied in the smaller tanks so they tend to fade.

I don't care if it is a venezuala, I just want to give it a good home. How big on average do they get? I know a 55 is a bit small for an adult and I have been eyeing a 75.... maybe this is the excuse I am waiting for.....

You def. need the 75gal...they generally get around 18" in aquaria, but it takes them a long time to get up that big. First year of growth is pretty fast though!! Just get it and upgrade!! You're right! It is a GREAT reason!! ;)

ok here is the best pic of it I could get...

Interesting. It almost DOES look like sp. 'xingu I'. Cool beans. sp. 'venezuela' generally have a more blunt snot. Still possible thats what it is though. Definately keep us updated! :D
