K1 or biomax

K1 I'm pretty sure is smaller and "more advanced" idk I got a good deal on K1 so I went with it, works good
 
Api Chem stars, they last forever. My fluval bio max is already breaking down after 6 months.

k1 is more than 10 years old its a moving bed media use in europe in water treatment, two diferent types of media
 
I have never used K1. I have used Biomax the Aquaclear ones. Hagen makes them along with the Fluval ones. I see F1 Vet said that his Fluval ones are breaking down so I do not know if they are any different. But the ones I have are 4-5 years old and I have no problems with them.
 
Not familiar with K1 is this the brand under which is marketed? And how does it differ from say Biomax?
 
is a sponge and k1 all you need in filtration or would it be best to hook up a canister also
