So I picked up 2 flower horns at the local Petco, sometimes the stock looks promising. The first I chose was an abused what looks kinda like a male (pictures to come). He had been picked on and was in a tank with blood parrots. He had some nice reds and yellows and I though there bight be potential. The second one (which evidently took alpha role immediately and started bullying the first when I got them unpacked) has a body shape that almost seems more round. I was wondering what the community thought? He has some darker muddier reds and lots of greenish blue reflective pearls. These pics are not the best, but the best I can get currently. They are both eating well, which I feel is a good sign since the last red one I brought home didn't eat and died within 2 days.

The first picture looks almost like a Flowerhorn X Blood Parrot. Not eating may be a sign of stress or disease. Hope that your tank is cycle.

That is an interesting mix, blood parrot with flower horn. I can see it though. What will he look like when he is bigger you think? More orange like the blood parrot?

The only ones that I've seen with pictures was on Aquabid.com Looks like a parrot, but with Flowerhorn colors.

As far as stress and not eating. My tank has been cycled for 2 years. The flower horn I had just didn't seem to take. It may have been diseased (its mouth was kinda crooked). The 2 new ones are doing well, I need to do something about the larger tank, the water feels a little cooler than I would like it, and it does need a water change. Flower horn is eating, and doesn't seem to be aggressive or abused by the juvi oscar pair that are also in with him. I hope he ends up being a community flowerhorn and tolerates a variety of tank mates. Only time will tell.

Do you test your water regularly? What are your readings for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates? 99% of the time a Flowerhorn will be aggressive towards others. This one guy on YouTube has a 200+ gallon with one about 7-8 inch Flowerhorn and a 10 inch wild caught Green Terror. And the Flowerhorn still bullies the Green Terror. It also faught with his two foot arrowana when it was in the same tank.

Flowerhorns are great fishes. Imo I believe they are best kept as a single wet pet by itself. You will enjoy the interaction with them more that way. Also no other fish will get hurt. My Flowerhorn likes temperatures of 83-85 F.Lower than that, he likes to stay near the heater.

One more thing, always quarantine new fish before adding them to an established tank. I quarantine all my fish, even if they are going to be in their own tanks. This assure me that they are healthy and in case I missed any signs. I quarantine them for 2-4 weeks, depending on how the look, act etc. Also it helps with cross contaminations.
